■高校の時の漢文の授業で習った「孟子」を思い出した。井戸に落ちそうにな った人を見たら誰もがとっさに助けるという例から、人間の性は善だと 孟子は主張した。だが、漢代では孟子よりも性悪説の殉死の方が儒家の正統と されたらしい。我が身に危険がおよぶとしたら、井戸に落ちそうになった人を 誰もが助けるわけではない。今回も助けに下りたのはこの二人だけだった。だ からこれほど称賛されるのだろう。

■「称賛の大きさに戸惑う」とある新聞のあるコラムに書かれていたが。同感 だ。すばらしい行為だとは思うが、追悼碑、感謝状、弔慰金などなど、この社 会は褒め称えることに飢えているのかと驚かされる。このような後では決まっ てその反動があるが、重箱の隅をつつくような非難がこれから先起きないよう に願う。
