THE GAZETTEER:EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...BRITHIS SCREEN IDOLS

Take four actors, all British, all in their late thirties.Three of them made their name in the same public school-based play, while the fourth got his first break playing a public schoolboy at Oxford. All four have been hailed as heroes or hunks, and at least three have been the subject of scandal, sensation and scathing criticism. While one of them, Rupert Everett, prepares for tomorrow's press night of Tennessee Williams's The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore ato the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, judge who's the fabbest of the four. Here's how they compare...

COLIN FIRTH

His background Eldest of three children of two teachers(mum Shirley lectures on comparative religion on Winchester). Was brought up in England, America and Nigeria, where his younger sister and fellow actor Kate was born. Educated at Barton Peveril College, Eastleigh, Hants. Trained at the London Drama Centre and acquired upper-crust,leading man image despite youthful 'wurzel' accent.
His big breakc ln 1983, played Judd, a dour, committed Communist schoolboy opposite Rupert Everett in Another Cointry on stage, and in 1984 on film.He continued to do solid work-Tumbledown, Hostages-before sending the UK's female population into a swoon with his moody, masterful, tight-trousered performance as Darcy in the BBC's Pride and Prejudice.
His follow-ups As Pride and Prejudice was shown, he was away working on The English Patient. Also starred this year as an Arsenal-obessed teacher in the film version of Fever Pitch, which did well without blazing ln glory.A bit like ArsenaI,really...
His significant other Firth has enjoyed an unrequited passion for Joanne Whalley(pre-Val Kilmer), and an on-set fling with Pride and Prejudice co-star Jennifer Ehle. But he has said: 'I don't enjoy being overwhelmed by someone. I don't need a woman around.' Sorry, ladies.
His saucy scandal Not so much a scandal as a personal eccentricity. Former flame Meg Tilly insisted Firth live with her in an isolaモed logcabin in the Canadian wilderness, where the future Darcy fathered his now six‐year‐old son, Will. Now travels to and fro as a transatlantically commuting dad.
His current prospects As ho‐hum as Winnie-the-Pooh humming a ho.Despite undisputed hunk status in UK, he has never quite conquered Hollywood. Tried to do so while making the Liaisons Dangereuses adaptation, Valmont, but the film stiffed. His hopes for a big-screen breakthrough in America currently rests with the King Lear-inspired rural drama A Thousand Acres, with Michelle Pfeiffer.
