The Tōrō Nagashi annual event in Hamura city, Tokyo

During the ceremony of Tōrō Nagashi, or 'lantern offerings on water', small paper lanterns (chōchin) containing lit candles are set afloat on the Tamagawa river.

Recently, more foreign residents and overseas visitors come from far and wide to see this marvel. Admission free. Parking lot for app. 100 cars, free of charge.

In this memorial during O-Bon (on the first Saturday of August) for those Danka members, the traditional Buddhist rite that honours the deceased is performed; many lanterns are floated downstream the river, creating a fabulous sight as they drift away.   Google map Hamura
Goeika, the 31-syllable poem of 5-7-5-7-7, is melodically recited.
Various Japanese Buddhist lineages include it in their traditional rites since transmitted from the Heian period in Japanese Buddhism.
