Annual Events; activities and reports |

The Tōrō Nagashi annual event in Hamura city,
Tokyo |
During the ceremony of Tōrō Nagashi, or 'lantern
offerings on water', small paper lanterns (chōchin) containing lit candles are
set afloat on the Tamagawa river. |
Goeika ceremony of Sōzenji temple |
Floats along the riverbank of Tamagawa |
Recently, more foreign residents and overseas
visitors come from far and wide to see this marvel. Admission free. Parking lot
for app. 100 cars, free of charge. |
In this memorial during
O-Bon (on the first Saturday of August) for those Danka members, the traditional
Buddhist rite that honours the deceased is performed; many lanterns are floated
downstream the river, creating a fabulous sight as they drift away. |
Goeika, the 31-syllable poem of
5-7-5-7-7, is melodically recited. |
Various Japanese
Buddhist lineages include it in their traditional rites since transmitted from
the Heian period in Japanese Buddhism. |
