Father Dupon

Yurigaoka Catholic Church Pastor

The Canadian father at the Yurigaoka church, Jean Guy Dupon, has lived in Japan for 35 years, since he came to Japan as a missionary from Quebec in 1957. Father Dupont has been the Yurigaoka church pastor for ten years and has gained much respect from the parishoners because of his deep faith, warm and candid nature. In addition to speaking French, his mother tongue, he is fluent in English, Spanish, and Japanese.

Before becoming the pastor at the Yurigaoka Church, Father Dupon served as a missionary in South America and at various parishes in Japan. Father Dupon stresses the importance of estabishing a local church community and devotes himself to spreading the missionary spirit within the community.

Father Dupon really likes Japanese food, and he has become completely familiar with the Japanese culture and nature. As such, he appears to have become Japanese in both idea and expression. Whenever Father Dupont returns to Canada, for a vacation his friends tell him in chorus, "You are no longer a Canadian".
