Rory's very first concert in Japan. This show was not on their first tour plan. They cancelled the last show on 30-Jan and advanced the tour schedule. So this additional first show was not sold out. Even the show was in great success. At the end (maybe later than In Your Town cut out) excited Japanese audience crowded on stage and someone snatched away a pick from Gerry's hand.
1974年日本での初公演。客席からの隠し録り（でかした！）ロリーがアコースティックナンバー「As The Crow Flies」の中間で、当時まだ日本人には馴染みの薄かったアイリッシュトラッド風の旋律を弾き始めると、徐々に満場の手拍子となり盛り上がってゆく。じつは当初の公演日程では25日のサンプラザが初日で30日の郵便貯金ホールが最終公演となっていたが、来日直前にスケジュール変更があったようだ。そのせいかこの急遽追加された初日は満席にはならなかったそうだが、終盤（この音源は「In Your Town」が途中までしか録音されなかったが、たぶんその後）には客がステージ上にまで押しかけて---実際に見に行った知人が警備のアルバイトをしていた友人から聞いたという話では、ジェリー・マカヴォイの手からピックを奪い取った客までいたとか、すごかったらしい。 |

1974年初来日の2公演め、途中録音テープ切れでカットの曲などもあり完全ではないが、アンコールまでの145分を収録。客席からの隠し録りとは思えないほど音は鮮明で、ロリーのギターも声も最高の出来。特にアドリブ全開の「Tattoo'd Lady / Just A Little Bit」と、馴染みの薄い曲ながらアンコールで演奏された大曲「Bo Diddley」はそれぞれが17分間に及ぶ熱演。「In Your Town」に至っては曲の中途からの録音で21分を超え、英語不得手の日本の聴衆の前でも、長い語りかけの歌を省かなかったロリーのひたむきさが光る。同じコンサートでもうひとつ、別の録音でカット曲なしの「Rock On Blues」も存在する。 |

「Tattoo'd In The East」と同じコンサートだが別の録音ソースを使い、こちらの音質も驚くほど良い。「Tattoo'd In The East」では長時間演奏曲「In Your Town」の頭が切れているが、このソースでは頭から収録されている。また、「Tattoo'd In The East」では録音マイク周辺の大騒ぎや女の子のお喋りなどを拾って、それが日本語なだけにどうしても気になる人もいると思うが、このソースでは録音者とその周辺が声や物音を立てないよう相当意識したと思われ、気を散らされる雑音がほとんど入ってこない。後者の方がローリーのプレイの素晴らしさに没頭できるが、前者の方が臨場感があって「これぞロリー・ギャラガー日本ライブだ！」という感慨がある、という趣向もあるだろう。お好みでお選びください。ブートレッグながら付録として、nero氏による8ページのオリジナル日本語解説ライナーノーツが付きますよ。 |

Circulating 2CD title and data "74/01/28, Kousei-Nenkin Hall, Osaka, Japan" is wrong. This is completely the same source with Oh No There Goes To Tokyo. (Thanks to Fr.) It means we have not got yet the real "Osaka 28-Jan-1974", the last one show left in Rory's first tour in Japan 1974. Originally seem to be with filler 3 tracks from 94/07/12 Montreux, but I have not received them.
「大阪74年1月28日」というタイトルで出回っていたが、実際には「Oh No There Goes To Tokyo」（1月26日中野サンプラザ）と全く同じ音源だったということが判明した。ということは、我々はまだ本物の「大阪74年1月28日」の音源を見つけていないということだ。 |

This audience recording of Rory Gallagher concert in Nagoya, Japan, 27th of January, 1974 is probably the first appearance of the show open to the public after its 34 years' concealment.
In January 2008, we came to know a Japanese man who filmed the show from the 2nd floor at Nagoya-shi Kokaido (Nagoya City Public Hall). It is a 4 minute footage of 8 mm film, perhaps the first and only publicly available motion picture of Rory on stage in Japan. The man was not particularly a fan of Rory Gallagher, but Rory impressed him as an unforgettable, single-hearted guitar player.
We were told that he also recorded the whole concert including the encore in 2 cassette tapes using the best equipment back in those days. After some negotiation, the taper agreed with us to have this recording digitally converted. We received the tape 1 from him, but the tape 2 was not to be found.
We almost gave up on the tape 2 and were prepared to release the first half of the concert digitally mastered in 1CD on the occasion of Rory's 60th birthday. It was just a few days before the scheduled release date, the 2nd of March, when we heard from the taper that he finally found the tape 2. Who could deny Rory's help from heaven for this?
We have spent ample time and taken great care to convert the tapes into digital audio CDs. The owner of the tapes has recorded and filmed various artists' concerts in Nagoya in 1970s. It was fortunate for us that he was already accustomed and skilled in recording when Rory Gallagher first toured in Japan in 1974, and was capable to do this high quality recording of Rory at the top of his form.
With this short history, this project was finished in June 2008, and we proudly decided to call it 'Rory Gallagher LIVE in JAPAN'.
Thanks to W for his advice and help from Europe. Great thanks and respect to osm, the taper from Japan, a music lover, who shared this masterpiece with us to make it possible to provide the recording to all the Rory fans. And "Thank you very much indeed!" Mr. Rory Gallagher. (June 2008)
2008年1月、34年間どこにも出さずに録音者本人の自宅に保管されていたというカセットテープが、名古屋から郵送されてきた。慎重に取り込んだデジタル音源テイク1で、エレックトリックバージョンの「Too Much Alcohol」を初めて聴いた時、関係者全員ぶっ飛んだ。「これはアイリッシュツアーを超えちゃったかも！」と思った…。ロリー絶頂期の演奏を当時最高の録音機器（デンスケ）を使用して完全収録したオーディエンス録音。録音者はロリー・ギャラガー特定のファンだったのではなく、1970年代来日アーティストの名古屋公演を数多く録音してきたとのことで、相当手慣れた録音。だからこそ、74年のロリー初来日でこれほどハイクォリティな録音が残り得たわけだ。それも、高価だったクロームメタルテープを再利用し、ロリーの直前の1週間に来日公演していたムーディー・ブルースの録音を潰して、オーバーラップ録音してしまったようだ。（ムーディー・ブルースのファンにはお気の毒。）我々ロリーファンにとっては天から降ってきた幸運としか言いようがない。カセットテープ2本のうち後半の1本が、録音者の家の中でなかなか見つからず、いったんは我々も諦めて、3月2日のロリー生誕60周年を機に前半だけの1CDで発表する寸前だったのを、そのわずか数日前に録音者から「2本めが見つかった」との連絡、急遽発表延期したという奇跡のような経緯のオマケ付き。まるでロリーが天国から身を乗り出して手を貸してくれたかのようだ。初めての日本のファンの前で全力で演奏するロリーは、特に熱狂的ファンだったわけではない録音者にとっても、忘れがたい好印象だったそうだ。名古屋市公会堂の音響も、客席の声援も、すべてが申し分ない。特にトラック15「In Your Town」、客席との“コラボレーション”は圧巻。ただ、20分に及ぶ演奏の終盤でテープ交換がされていたが、ビートを数えながら違和感を最小におさえて繋いだつもりだ（muew氏の功績）。ロリー、ジェリー、ロッド、ルーの最高の演奏、34年も昔に録音されたことを考えればこれ以上は望みようのない状態で発掘した録音を、アマチュアの我々に可能な最善の形で再現して、なんとかカットなしの完全盤で、世界中のロリーファンに伝えたかった。これはもう“文化遺産”だ---というのは発掘者のひいき目だろうか？ |

"Is it forgotten or the lost show in Tokyo 30-Jan-1974?"
When you have got a chance to see Rory's Tokyo Japan 1974 tourposter or flier, you will find the date 30-Jan on it. It would have been a mystery for Rory collectors. Actually the 30-Jan show was cancelled. In their first plan, Rory would have had 3 shows in Tokyo on 25th, 26th at Nakano Sunplaza and the last show on 30th at Shiba Yubin-Chokin Hall. But after they sold tickets they changed the schedule and shifted the last show on 30th to the first show on 23th at the same venue. It might be caused by flight schedule or changing something of USA/Canada tour continuing directly after Japan tour.
1974年東京公演のポスターやチラシを見ると「1月30日、芝・郵便貯金ホール」の記述があるので、特に海外のコレクターには混乱の元になっているようだが、来日直前にスケジュール変更があり、30日の公演は中止され急遽23日に追加された。彼らは30日夜の便で羽田からアメリカに向けて飛び立っている。（1978年まで成田空港はまだなかったのよ。）

From the start to track 06 (Walk On Hot Coals cut uncompleted), tape speed sounds too slow, from track 07 (continue of Walk On Hot Coals) maybe correct speed. Track 13 Who's That Coming is from different studio live source, maybe from transmitted radio program.

1990年代にカポからオフィシャルリリースされた「G-menブートレッグ・シリーズ」3枚組の1枚「Calling Hard Part 1」に収録されているのと同じ音源で、BBCのライブ番組だが、こちらの方が完全収録盤。多分「BBC In Concert」シリーズのLPが音源だろう。当然、録音はハイクオリティ。ローリーのヴォーカルに強いエコーがかかるのが特徴。だが音源に使用したLPの盤面に派手な引っかき傷があったようで、ポツンポツンという雑音が1曲めに入る。 |

There is a demonstration image of ticket stub printed "at the ANCIENNE BELGIQUE Brussels on Monday September 21st at 8 pm". But it was Saturday 21-Sep-1974. 21-Sep-1975 was Sunday. 21-Oct-1974 was Monday. I have no idea about this confusion. Maybe they misprinted the date on ticket. Possible to think this show is from Ancienne Belgique 21-Oct-1974, instead of "Belrorygium, Ancienne Belgique 21-Oct-1974 (or 24-Oct-1974)" . |
