Butoh dancer - Dance thrapist - Psychologist
More than half a century has passed since Hijikata originated Butoh in Japan in 1950s.
Now in 21st century, the traditional old dayfs Butoh dance style can be obsolete to some
extent (although it is still significant for basic Butoh training), and Butoh has been
proliferated in each country by taking in its own cultural, historical, religious backgrounds,
but there is one thing that is left unchanged: its authentic creativity. Itto Morita has
performed, practiced, and studies Butoh, and found out the body-mind exploration of Butoh
is the core approach to realize the authentic creativity.
Ittofs workshop is based on 1) the
ideas and practices of Noguchi Taiso (physical exercises), utilized by most Japanese Butohists,
for the most efficient way of movement using the weight of the body, or combination of
passive movements with active ones, and 2) the different state of consciousness obtained
under the non-egocentric mentality. These two factors for body-mind exploration also have
been found effective in dance/movement therapy sessions at mental clinics/ hospitals.
Itto Morita (performing for 20 years), or Toshiharu Kasai, is a professor of department of
clinical psychology of Sapporo Gakuin University in Japan. He is the Director of the Sapporo
Dance Movement Institute and a certified dance-therapist, supervisor and board member of
the Japanese Dance Therapy Association. He is the only Butoh dancer /dance therapist
/psychologist in the world. He is currently carrying out a residency in University of
Hertfordshire in UK, studying authentic movement. One of the ultimate purposes of his
Butoh dance activities is soul healing of his own, and hopefully of others through Butoh
performance.
