Hijikata and Ohno

by Sondra Fraleigh and Tamah Nakamura
Published by Routledge 2006
(ISBN 0-415-35439-0)
Itto and Mika of GooSayTen, met and talked with Sondra for the first time in 2003
when "Human Body as Universal Sign" International Conference was held
in Krakow, Poland, to which Itto and Sondra were invited as keynote speakers.
We also had a talk with Tamah several times in Fukuoka, Japan, who has been
studying a Butoh company Seiryukai that has been active in the area for years.

This book, a joint venture of two people with Butoh experiences,
fully covers the historical, also political, backgrounds of Butoh
by describing two Butoh originators, Hijikata and Ohno.
One third of the book deals with several Butoh performers and their Butoh
practices called "Dance Expriences". By following each performer's guidance step by step,
you can learn how you enter the world of Butoh, technically, mentally, and spiritually.
(Our arm-standing exercise was included.)
The glossaries of English and Japanese terms, bibliography, and index are substantial and
useful to understand a Japanese avant-garde Butoh that started back in 1950s.
