初代駐日英国公使ラザフォド・オールコックの主著。ロンドン郊外のイーリングに医者の子とし

て生まれ、イベリア半島に従軍の後に外交官となり、中国福州、上海、広東で領事を勤めたの

ち1859年に英国総領事として来日。1862年まで幕末・開国期の日本で日英修好通商条約批

准、開港開市問題などの外交活動で活躍、文久遣欧使節団の派遣にも尽力した。本書はオ

ールコックが賜暇一時帰国中の1863年に、3年間の滞日記録をまとめ、日本の自然、地理、言

	語、宗教、政治、経済、法律、社会、生活習慣、美術工藝などにわたり縦横に論述している。
