	宗教、外交史に関する概論のほか、江戸から都への旅、日本人の日常生活、
	道中風景、日本と西洋諸国の接触の開始についての要約的著述を含む。
	ローレンス・オリファントが著した「エルギン卿中国・日本使節」記とともに、重要な書。
	廣重の風景画（カラー複製6点）を配し、日本の情景を伝えている。
