イギリスの海軍士官・探検家ブロートン（1762-1821)は1791-95年のバンクーバー遠征隊に

参加した後、プロヴィデンス号艦長として1796年松前、蝦夷島、北東航路、日本東沿岸、

琉球を航海、さらにマカオから那覇港を経て九州沖、江戸湾を確認後松前を再訪,津軽海峡

を通過し蝦夷地沿岸、さらに日本海を南下して対馬、朝鮮沿岸までの航海調査を行った。

本書はこの2回にわたる航海調査の記録で、大型の航海地図の他、蝦夷地の習俗、風景などの挿絵、
