オズボーン(1822-1875)は、1858年（安政5）日英修好通商条約締結のため来日した

エルギン卿使節団のフリゲート艦フューリアス号艦長。

その訪日記は最初Blackwood Magazineに連載、1859年に初版が刊行。

長崎、江戸の訪問記など全10章。著者には外交交渉や日本の旅行記を

綴った「日本の断章」Japanese Fragments がある。同使節団の秘書として随行した

オリファントの「エルギン卿使節録」とともに、開国初期の訪日記の重要書。
