アメリカ人鉱山学者パンペリーは、1861年徳川幕府の招きで来日、北海道の地質調査を行い

、また函館で鉱山採掘法や溶鉱技術などを教え、1863年まで滞在。本書は全28章、日本の記

録は第6章から14章まで、横浜、日本の政治、日本の宗教、美術、1862（文久2)年5月と8月の

2度にわたる蝦夷地旅行により、地質、地形、火山、鉱物、温泉を調査した他、アイヌ民族の習

俗、祭礼などを記録、また徳川政権の蝦夷政策などを論じている。25点の本文中挿絵、折り

	込み地図「蝦夷南部」など4点の地図。
