井上十吉(1862-1929)は徳島藩に生まれ、明治4年慶応義塾に入学、

後にイギリスに留学、ロンドン大学、キングズ・カレッジに学んだ。帰国後東京大、

東京高等商業学校などで英語教師となり、「井上英和大辞典」など10余種の

辞典を作成、また「仮名手本忠臣蔵」の英訳など日本文化の海外紹介にも

手掛けた。本書は明治期の東京の生活を手彩色の図版や豊富な挿絵で紹介する
