ドイツの地理学者・日本研究家ライン（Johannes Justus Rein, 1843-

1918）は、マールブルク、ボンの大学の教授を歴任し、1873年

プロイセン王国政府の命により、「日本の工藝調査」を名目に来日、

日本をほぼ縦断する旅行を行い、各地の地理・産業を詳細に調査した。

本書は、ドイツ語版から翻訳された英語版。明治初期の日本の地誌の

重要な調査記録。

巻末の2枚の大型折込み地図は喪失しています。
