ラサに到達しようと試み、ラマ僧や兵士に捕らえられ、投獄、拷問を受けるが

釈放される。チベットの社会、文化、言語、風習、音楽、産物など、著者による

豊富な絵を添えた描写。8枚のカラー図版、５０の全頁大図版、

およそ150の挿絵、折込地図を含む。なお、著者は1890年には

北海道を一周する旅行をして「蝦夷地一周一人旅」（Alone with the hairy Ainu.

	1893)を出版している。
