バークレー伯爵家に生まれ、後のクレイヴン卿と結婚したが、1780年に離婚、その

後イタリア、オーストリア、ポーランド、ロシア、トルコ、ギリシアを旅行し、1789年に本

書をロンドンで出版した。後に結婚するアンスバハ侯爵あてのクレイヴン夫人よりの

一連の手紙の形式で書かれ、クリミア、トルコの風景の彫版図（前頁大）と折込

地図が含まれる。図版に含まれる「アンティパロスの洞窟」に「最初に降りた女性」

	と言われ、また劇作家としても知られ、ウォルポールにより絶賛されている。
