イギリスの旅行家オリファント(1829-1888)は、1852年にサンクト・ペテルブルグを

訪問する旅に出発し、それよりニジニ・ノヴゴロドからクリミアに至る旅行を行った。

クリミア戦争の切迫は本書のこの記録に特別な関心を与えている。

著者は後にエルギン卿の日本・中国使節（1857-59)に参加し、また1861年には

江戸の英国公使館書記官として滞在中に水戸浪士の襲撃を受け（東禅寺事件）

重傷を負い、帰国していたが、ロンドンでは幕府の遣欧使節に対し援助をしている。
