イギリスの軍人・外交官・文筆家グリーイ(1835-1888)は、

1860年イギリス軍のキャプテンとなり、アロー号事件、第2次アヘン戦争

時にはホープ提督の下で活動した。その後来日し、日本の英国公使館の秘書官

となった。日本のあらゆるものを熱愛し、言語、文学、美術、風習に耽溺した。アメ

リカに移住後も、日本の陶器や織物などの商売を行い成功を収めた。この他にも

日本に関するいくつもの著書がある。本書のカバーは著者によるデザイン。180点

の図版、「函館、アイヌの中で、蝦夷の山々、熊狩り、イヨマンテ、樺太」など。
