ギューリック(Sidney Lewis Gulick, 1860-1945)は日本や東洋伝道に尽くした

ギューリック一族の一人で、ニューヨークのユニオン神学校で学んだ後、1887年

アメリカン・ボード宣教師として来日。熊本、松山をはじめ九州、四国において

宣教活動に従事し、1906年京都に移り同志社、京都帝国大学で教授した。

日米親善に多くの貢献をし、日本に関する知識をアメリカに伝えた。

本書は1903年に著した日本人の国民性に関する考察で、多くの反響を得た。全37章。
