リギンス(John Liggins, 1829-1912)はイギリス生まれ、1841年渡米しバージニア州

アレキサンドリアの聖公会神学校で学び、同窓に日本聖公会の最初の主教、

立教大学開祖として活躍したC.M.ウィリアムズがおり、1856年アメリカ監督派教会の

派遣で中国に宣教師として渡り、司祭となって1859年長崎に来航した。

まだ禁教下にあった長崎で日本人に英語を教育した。本書はリギンスが日本、アジア、

	アフリカへの外国宣教を概説した書。
