アメリカ独立百周年の祝典として、独立宣言が発表されたフィラデルフィアで1876

年5月10日〜11月10日開催され、37か国が参加、当時の米国総人口の20%に相

当する1000万人近くの入場者を記録した。日本政府は1873年のウィーン博に続い

て参加し、大久保利通が総裁、西郷従道副総裁、御用掛に1867年パリ万博に派

遣された徳川昭武が就任した。多額の予算を出費し、大工を派遣して日本家屋の

専用場ヴィリオンを建設、陶磁器・絹織物・木工美術品・家具など驚嘆させる産品

	を出品した。本書は冒頭にロンドン博、パリ博、ウィーン博覧会の歴史を概説。
