モース（1838-1925)はアメリカ・ポートランドに生まれ動物学を学び、1877年来日。

横浜から東京へ行く車窓から大森貝塚を発見、後に東京大学で動物学を教授。

考古学や日本の陶器や日本建築の研究も行った。1879年帰国し、セイラムの

ピーボディ博物館の館長に就任し、1916年まで在職した。

本書は日本の住居、建築物に関する研究書で、300点余の挿絵を含む。
