ガウランド(1842-1922)は、イングランド北東部サンダーランドに生まれ、

ロンドンの英国鉱山学校で化学、冶金学を専攻した。1872年来日し、

明治政府のお雇い外国人として大阪造幣局に勤め、16年間の滞日期間中、

技術指導のかたわら、日本各地の古墳調査を行い、その発掘資料は

大英博物館に収蔵され「日本考古学の父」として、また外国人として

、初期に日本中部山岳地帯を登攀し「日本アルプス」の命名者として知られる。

本書は英国雑誌Archaeolgiaに発表したガウランドの論文。
