「日本の近代登山の父」として知られるイギリス人宣教師、ウォルター・ウ

ェストン(1861-1940)は、1888年（明治21）の初来日以降、3回にわたり

足掛け17年におよぶ滞日経験をもとに、日本アルプスをはじめ各地の

山岳地帯、農山村を訪れた。王立地理学協会誌、アルパイン・ジャーナル、

タイムズなど英米の学術雑誌、新聞に多数の報告を発表し、日本の

地理、文化、特に都市部から離れた農山村の地誌・文化を詳細に記録した。
