1872年から80年までアルパイン・ジャーナルの編集を務め、世界各国を旅行、登山。

1893年から1895年までアルパインクラブの会長、1914年から17年まで務めた。

多数の旅行記、登山記を著し、大いに登山、探検の気風を振興させた。

本書は1913年に来日し、フジをはじめ甲州の山々を旅した印象記を含む。
