ェストンは、1888年（明治21）の初来日以降、3回にわたり足掛け17年におよ

訪れた。王立地理学協会誌、アルパイン・ジャーナル、タイムズなど英米

の学術雑誌、新聞に多数の報告を発表し、また日本の地理、文化、特に

都市部から離れた農山村の地誌・文化を詳細に記録した。本書はジオグ

ラフィック・マガジンに発表した記事で全頁大のフルカラーの彩色写真を含む。
