イギリスの軍人・外交官・文筆家グリーイ(1835-1888)は、1860年イギリス軍の

キャプテンとなり、アロー号事件、第2次アヘン戦争時にはホープ提督の

下で活動した。その後来日し、日本の英国公使館の秘書官となった。

日本のあらゆるものを熱愛し、言語、文学、美術、風習に耽溺した。アメリカに

移住後も、日本の陶器や織物などの商売を行い成功を収めた。

この他にも日本に関するいくつもの著書がある。本書のカバーは著者による

デザイン。172点の挿絵があるが多くは、アンベールの模写と思われる。
