王立地理学会員、シンプソン（1823-1899)は、グラスゴーの貧しい家庭に生まれ

窮乏の生活のなかで教育もわずかにしかうけなかったが、グラスゴーの

リトグラフ会社で働き、挿絵画家として成長した。クリミア戦争、アビシニアの戦争、

普仏戦争、パリコンミューンなどの風景を描き、1866年にはIllustrated London News

からも依頼されている。本書のほかにも多数の著書がある。
