アメリカ人地理学者、人類学者スタール(1858-1933)は1904年来日、日本各地を旅行し

神社札を収集して「お札博士」と呼ばれた。大の知日家で、滞日中は和服を着用、

日本に関する著作も多く、1921年には日本親善に尽くした功績により勲3等瑞宝章を

贈られている。また関東大震災で灰塵に帰した東京を訪れ、本書冒頭には「大災害のなかで

自分の富士山コレクションを救おうとして命を落とした富士山の権威、曽我部一紅（万朝報記者）

に捧げる」と記している。東京聖路加病院にて肺炎で死去、遺骨は富士山麓須走に埋葬された。
