黄色い足でヒバリシギに似ていますが，ヒバリシギより短い首，顔から頭部にかけての模様が違います． 上の写真で比較してください．
アラスカ，北カナダで繁殖し冬季アメリカ合衆国南部から北チリ，中央ブラジル，西インド諸島へ移動します． 北米では一番小さなシギ類とされています．亜種は記録されていません．
