雄は頭部が灰色で上面は濃い茶色，
腹部は薄い褐色です．種Cacomantis merulinusには4亜種が記録されています．
♂は頭部が灰色で胸から腹にかけてバフ色です．頭部の灰色が顎から下の喉，胸，腹のどこまで繋がっているかで亜種の識別をするようです．
♀は図鑑の絵で見る限り区別ができません．写真の個体は胸，腹部の横縞が薄いので若鳥かもしれません．
