Dear Friends of MOPAWI,
Thank you very much for your interest and concern expressed in the letters,
calls, and e-mail messages that we have received from so many of you during
this time of emergency in La Mosquitia. It has not been an easy time, but
we are reassured that we have your support through your generous thoughts,
prayers, and contributions.
Unfortunately, because of the amount of requests for information, we are
not able to respond individually, but hope that the following general
information about La Mosquitia will provide a basic panorama of the current
situation.
SUMMARY OF DAMAGES AND NEEDS IN LA MOSQUITIA
Preliminary Statistics:
- 12,300 people evacuated
- 21,059 people (approx. 4,000 families) with household/subsistence damages
- 4 deaths (Brus Laguna/Bulnes); 73 injured (Ahuas, Brus Laguna, Wampusirpe)
- 960 houses flooded/430 houses damaged
- 1225 Cattle drowned
- 90% loss of subsistence crops
- Other community infrastructure damages such as loss of bridges, docks,
roads, water systems and community buildings
Most affected communities by municipality:
- Ahuas: Waxma, Wawina, Patalaya, Kropunta
- Brus Laguna: Tuitanta, Kusuapaika, Brus Centro, Nueva Jerusalem, Belen,
Baltimor, Cocobila, Las Marias
- Puerto Lempira: Auka, Leimus, Suhi, Tussita
- Raya: Raya, Ilaya, Usibila, Kruta, Coco Tingni, Mango Tara, Laka, Tipi,
Auka
- Bulnes: Limonal, Palacios, Batalla, Toca Macho, Plaplaya, Ibans, Banaka
- Wampusirpe: Wampusirpe, Tukrun, Krausirpe, Tawahka communities
Main Needs according to Priority
- For immediate emergency/relief: fuel, food, water, helicopters, radios
- For short-term relief: plastic sheets for shelter, water containers,
chlorine, food, medications, mosquito nets, sea/air transport
- For medium-term rehabilitation/reconstruction: seeds, tools, livestock,
technical assistance, health care and education
MOPAWI has been working in channeling resources to the appropriate local
organizations to provide for immediate relief. This has included two
medical brigades in the region, supply of medications, food and clothing.
However, the needs are great, and there are many areas that MOPAWI has not
been able to cover. MOPAWI is also concerned about short-term
reconstruction and rehabilitation, especially in the area of production,
since most people lost their means of subsistence.
Many of you wanted to know how you can help. The attachment explains
briefly MOPAWI's plan of action during this time. Both material and
monetary contributions are very important and necessary to provide a
helping hand to the people of La Mosquitia. Monetary contributions can be
