FOUR REPRESENTATIVE MOSQUE TYPES

The Amr Mosque, Old Cairo, Egypt, 642 -827
The 'Arabic type' is the most orthodox type, having a continuous
hypostyle hall covered by a flat roof, around the courtyard.


The King's Mosque (now Imam's Mosque), Isfahan, Iran, 1612-30
The 'Persian type' has four Iwans facing each other around the courtyard,
having inherited its form from Sasaniyan palace architecture.


The Yeni Camii (Mosque), Istanbul, Turkey, 1597-1663
The 'Turkish type' has a large hemispherical dome enclosing the huge
astylar interior space, just like a membranous tent.


The Friday Mosque, Old Delhi, India, 1650-56
The 'Indian type' has a prominent worship hall on Makka side of
the vast courtyard, just as a freestanding building in an plaza.
