Place explanation
The area around the Togetsu Bridgi, which spans the River Oi, is called Arashiyama.
Its beautiful scenery has been celebrated in poem and song since olden times.
The area known as Sagano, which begins on the far side of the bridgi, at the base of the mountains,
has many temples and villas of the nobility and Arashiyama and Sagano are now two of kyoto's most interesting sightseeing areas.

Adashino Nenbutsu-ji
The name Adashino means "Place of sadness",
and, in olden times, the bodies of those
who died without friends or relatives were
left here unburied.
More than 8,000 stone Buddha and pagodas
have been erected at Nenbutsu-ji Temple in
prayer for the repose of these dead souls. |

Daikaku-ji

This hermitage was the place to which princess
Gio, her sister Gijo, their mother Toji,
and a girl named Shirabyoshi retreated after
the Princess lost the affection of the ruler
at the time.
Taira-no Kiyomori Wooden statues of the women,
who died here, and of Kiyomori are displayed. |

Jikishi-an Temple
This temple famous as a haven for women beset
by tangle love-affairs.
Many of them have written about their problems
in the notebooks kept at the temple, called
Omoide-gusa, or "Books of Reminiscenles",
and some have stayed on and become nuns. |

Jingo-ji Temple
The originate place for Heian Buddhism.

A dramatic dragon is painted on the ceiling
of in the Hondo Hall. The Sogenchi pond on the ground is shaped
like the Chinese character for heart, which
means enlightened heart to Zen followers. |

There is a natural monument of six hundred
years old pine tree call "Yuryu Matsu"
