６０.桃園川緑道を行く（４）

緑道の各所には入り口のカエルの彫刻同様にいろいろな生き物のオブジェが配置されている。
菊華高校（杉並学院）の近くには亀の親子の像。
真夏の陽射しに暑そうだ。
たぶん、かつて桃園川に生息していた生き物を象っているのだろう。
この他にもタニシや白サギのオブジェを見ることができる。
大正末期まではこの周辺、水田だったという。
関東大震災と戦災後の都市化の波により
桃園川は河川として生き残ることが出来なくなったのだ。

60. Going Down to Momozono River Green Road (4)

There are the carvings of various living things at each spot of Green Road,
like the sculpture of the frogs at the entrance.
The sculpture of the parent and child turtles, near Shouka High School 
(Suginami Academy), seems to be hot in the heat of the sunlight of midsummer.
Presumably, these sculptures are modeled on living creatures  which once dwelled 
in Momozono River. In addition, there’re more figures of a freshwater snail and 
an egret. People have  said that there once were rice paddies around here till the 
last stage of Taisho. 
The Momozono River couldn’t survive as a river because of the Great Kanto Earthquake
and the wave of urbanization after the war devastation.
