４２.道標ポスト

阿佐ヶ谷の地名の語源に浅い谷という説がある。
JR阿佐ヶ谷駅に向かう道は
すべて緩やかな坂だ。
ポストは五叉路の一角に据えられていて
ここから駅に向かって急な下り坂になっている。
自転車だとかなりのスピードが出て危険だ。
随分前、子供が自転車とぶつかって血だらけになっているのを見たことがある。
しかも、この先は五叉路。飛び出しは厳禁。
このポストは自転車で通る時、スピードを落とす目標になっている。
因みにこのポスト。
利用者が多いので年末年始は年賀状でパンクするのだ。

42. Sign of the Mailbox

It is said that Asagaya comes from "a shadow valley".
Taken altogether, most ways to JR Asagaya station are gentle slopes.
A mailbox is set on the corner of the Five Crossings,
and we have a steep downward slope from here toward the station.
It is dangerous at any speed when we ride on a bicycle.
I've seen a child bleeding as he had collided head on with a bicycle there.
And it's the Five Crossings right ahead. Running out is strictly prohibited.
So this mailbox is the sign which tells us to reduce our speed, 
when I pass here by bicycle.
Incidentally, the mailbox is full of New Year's Cards
since it has lots of users at the beginning and end of the year.
