"CROSS THE HEAVEN'S RIVER"

2005年7月7日のロンドン地下鉄テロの一年後の7月7日七夕にむけての展覧会。
同じマスクに異なったバックグラウンドをもたせている作品。マスクは武人の能面。

We participated Art Camp in Mongolia in July 2005. We were staying huge and empty plane. The sky was totally blue. It's only the sound of the wind. The crowd of the domestic animal sometimes passed in front of us. One beautiful and sunny day. A Mongolian man who visited our art camp from Ulan Bator told us terrorism occurred in London. Some artists who are living in London were there, too. It was very shocking for us. It happened 7th July.
Japanese has a Star Festival called "TANABATA" in 7th July. The festival celebrates the meeting of ORIHIME (Vega) and HIKOBOSHI (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separated these two lovers, and they were allowed to meet only once a year. People write their wish on the paper and hanging the paper on a bamboo tree.
7th July, it's the day for wish in Japan. And it's also the last day of our exhibition. So we hope our works meet people in there by crossing the border, and wish for something together toward 7th July.
Our desire for peace is put on July 7.
TANABATA

There are a lot of stories about the origin of TANABATA. The most well known story is as follows. A long time ago, TEN-KOU (the god of the sky) had a daughter called ORIHIME. She wove cloth for the Gods with a special machine called TANAHATA everyday. (It is believed that the word TANABATA comes from the name of this weaving machine, TANAHATA.)
TEN-KOU was worried because his daughter worked every day and did nothing but weave. So he introduced her to a guy on the other side of the river named AMANOGAWA (it's the Milky Way). His name was HIKOBOSHI. HIKOBOSHI took care of cows and was a workaholic.
When they met each other, they fell in love immediately, and spent all their time together. As a result, all the cows became sick and the gods' clothes became worn out, but there was no new cloth to make more.
This made TEN-KOU very angry and he stopped ORIHIME from meeting HIKOBOSHI anymore by taking her to the other side of AMANOGAWA. This made the two lovers so sad that they couldn't work. TEN-KOU also felt sorry, so he decided to let them meet each other once a year on July 7th if they worked hard.
Traditionally, people wished the sky would be clear on that day so the two could meet over the Milky Way. If it rained that day, the water level of the river AMANOGAWA got too high and could not be crossed.
People wished this by writing the wish on a piece of paper and hanging the paper on a bamboo tree. Nowadays, people write their own wish on the paper. The bamboo and decorations are often set float on a river or burned after the festival, around midnight or on the next day. This resembles the custom of floating paper ships and candles on rivers during OBON. Many areas in Japan have their own TANABATA customs, which are mostly related to local OBON traditions.
